Spring time organization
Along with the "annual" spring cleaning, you should think about organizing as you go, too.
Over the years of moving and keeping house with very busy children (4), I've picked up a few tips. Some are just common sense and others were one of those "a - ha" moments.
You first need to figure out where you have storage in your home. Walk around your home and write down every area you can use, closets, under beds, furniture, attic, garage, top shelves, etc.
Even if they are already stuffed just record that you have this space.
Now, as you probably have started your spring cleaning (see prior blog), you know what areas you need to tackle. You should have same like items stored together. Out of season clothing together, sporting goods, keepsakes, taxes, hobby items, tools, seasonal decor. You get the idea. When you know what you need to store, you might need to move some things around from one spot to another to get them all together.
As you go through your items, sort them just like when you were spring cleaning (or maybe doing it at the same time). Keep and store what you will need. Have a maybe/sell pile and a donate pile. Get rid of the donate pile quickly. Do not let it sit around the house for you or someone else to change their minds and it remains part of the clutter!
My goal has been to lighten the load. Especially when moving!! Once you have removed the clutter and donated. You can begin to put away the items to store if your not moving.. You might even discover you actually have the space for these items without having to build a storage shed out back!
And if you are moving my next blog will contain advise on storage that will make it easy to move.
For now, enjoy clearing up the clutter and donating (tax benefits).
